This marks my Fourth Season into coaching a frisbee team.
The difference is, this time we seemingly have succeeded to build a culture that we can be proud off. Whatever this culture was, it is called the — The Tapir Standard.
Some notes on Culture Building:
-
It must be top down. Meaning: it all starts from the party with the largest say in the team.
-
Have a few leaders of the team who believe in your vision.
-
Then stick through the vision, execute no matter what. No exceptions.
-
Once it reaches a critical mass, probably 60-70% of the team, it becomes the identity of the team. The buy for the rest, will eventually happen.
-
Shaping culture is difficult. You will get pushbacks. The path can be lonely as the visionary as people are averse to changes.
-
It may take couple of tries. But never lose sight on yourself.
-
It takes huge emotional stability as the one who push for changes.
-
Lastly, 心存善念,尽力而为。
I am forever grateful for the Tapir 2025 rendition on showing myself, and the world, how far a team who cares for each other can go.
